With the lift gate to the pedal adapter he could do it all and did it better than most. He was a strong infuence to a lot of young sailor. I just had a “Gary” moment, when I decided to put his name on the internet and see where he was. I am happy (and sad) to know he is in heaven. Gary was always a maverick. I can only imagine the life he and your family have established in Ramona. My daughter, Melinda Gaughan, was very active in the Ramona area. I wonder if you knew her (small world). I never imagined any reason Gary could not accomplish something he had his mind made up to do. Several times, I carried him into a dumbwaiter so he could attend a dinner function, or any other times I traveled with him and assisted him as an aide. He accomplished a lot, and I was proud to be there to offer assistance. Myself, I am living in northern California. I would have liked to have seen Gary one more time. | Comments: | I knew him as the "relative on wheelchair" when we go to Steve & Tanya's for gatherings/parties. Then last year, we invited him and Martha to us house to celebrate mother's day. He is still the "relative on wheelchair". Then the time came for them leave. Everyone was leaving and all of a sudden everyone took a u-turn to see Stacia's house from across the street leaving Gary on the curbside. I felt really bad that Gary was sitting out in the sun all by himself, so I sat next to him on the curbside.What do I say? What should I do? He made me feel at ease the time I sat on the curbside. That's when I got to know Gary. In the short 10 minutes we spent, I realized that his positivity in life is more than someone who has no limitations in life. I was so impressed by his outlook in life and he is speaking like someone who has all functioning limbs. His wheelchair vanished so quickly and I came to know him as Gary. | Comments: | I had the honor of meeting Gary and working with him on the Ramona and Poway Rodeo committees. Very quickly I observed he was not just a 'man in a wheelchair.' Gary was so very caring of others with special needs. He was friendly, funny and a great orchestrator of Rodeo preparedness. Gary and his family were so kind and shared their home, and meals, with us during the week long events, but rarely could he stay up late enough to join in on our bonfires! It was always funny to see Gary napping during the main event after a long day's work! Gary, you will be missed! |

Gary did this in Ramona and Poway Rodeo volunteering, sailing, fishing, ATV off-roading, ranching and his construction business, Breakwater Construction. The fact that he did all this and more with the facility of a power wheel chair left your mind as soon as he engaged you in activity. What a guy. |
